Makar Sankranti Food and Traditions to Celebrate the Festival

The new year has started, and a new year brings a new calendar with it. Every year, 14th January is the day of Makar Sankranti or MaghiSangr and celebrations. This day is famous for kites, til chikki, dahi, and a number of other aspects of fun and celebration. The day of Makar Sankranti is a symbol of the movement of the sun into the Capricorn sun sign.

This day has different names. For example, West India embraces it as Makar Sankranti and South India as Pongal. Usually, this day indicates the beginning of the well-known KumbhMela in Uttar Pradesh. It is also a finishing point of the harvesting season in Punjab and different parts of North India.

In this article, we have discussed several food items served during Makar Sankranti in the different states across India. These also symbolize the new year as per Hindu calender.

The Importance of Makar Sankranti and the Food Items Served

Makar Sankranti is a solar episode. It is one of the few Hindu festivals that occur on the same day of the year even in Hindu Calender as well. Hence, it occurs on a fixed day each year. The festival also symbolizes the transition of the sun into Makar Rashi.

No festival in Indiais complete without food;therefore,a number of Makar Sankranti food traditions exist and people all over India follow them. A collection of some famous Makar Sankranti food recipes people enjoy on this day is as follows:

TilChikkis/Laddoos

No Makar Sankranti celebration is complete in absence of these sweet dishes which people consume and exchange all through the day. You can prepare these dishes by making use of jaggery (gud) and sesame seeds (til). These are among the most popular Makar Sankranti food dishes.

People eat Tilchikkisas well as Panjeeriladdos and say “eat sesame seeds and jaggery and voice sweet words”. By offering these tasty sweets to others, people decide to bury the past and begin a new fruitful chapter in their lives. Sesame/Til delicacies are common all over India and people consume them with jaggery and coconut in South India.

Chiwda Curd (DahiChooda)

Chiwdacurd is a blend of flattened rice (Chiara or Chura) and curd (Dahi). It is a specialty of the East Indian traditions. As a substitute for sugar, people choose jaggery to sweeten the dish and give a genuine flavour. You can also mix a little milk and freshly cut vegetables to make it a filling and healthy food.

KhichdiPapad

Obviously, no festivities are complete in absence of aromatic khichdi and roasted papad in the households of North India. Khichdi is a blend of rice (chawal) and lentils (daal) which you can prepare in a mixture of spices. You can also mix veggies such as peas, potatoes, and cauliflower to this Makar Sankranti food dish and serve it along with fried or freshly roasted papad.

Ghee Churma with Kheer and Halwa

Sweet churma is a tasty ensemble of wheat. We roast wheat in sugar and ghee with some added flavors to boost the palate. Kheer and Halwa rule the kitchens of Punjab, Haryana, and some others and enhance the pleasantness of this festival.

Puran Poli

This Makar Sankranti food dish was initiated in Maharashtra. People consume it due to its texture and flavor. It is a standard flatbread full of finely chopped jaggery, which people mix with roasted gram flour and til (sesame). People serve it with loads of molten ghee poured over it and enjoy it with a distinctive sense of gratification.

Undhiyu

In the state of Gujarat, people rejoice the festival with their preferred lunch of undies and jalebis accompanied by other dishes such as basundi, khichdi, goondar paak and till kichikki.

Pathishapta, PithePuli from Bengal

In Bengal, Poush Sankranti is another name for Makar Sankranti. The different types of food dishes of Makar Sankranti such as Pathishapta, PithePuli and payesh are prepared and consumed to celebrate the festival of Makar Sankranti.

Sakkarai Pongal in South India

Conventional Sakkararai Pongal is a dish that people cook with rice, moong dal, cashew, and jaggery in ghee and is a popular Makar Sankranti food dish. In the South Indian state of Tamilnadu, Makar Sankranti is celebrated as a festival of richness. There, it is referred to as Pongal.

Makar Sankranti food has an excessive importance owing to its characteristic value of productivity and accomplishment.
